| The Portiuncula (St. Mary of the Angels) set within the huge basilica. This small church was abandoned, but owned by the Benedictines. The Benedictines loved St. Francis, and let him use the church. In return, Francis paid the Benedic- tines an annual bucket of fish. This little church became the home base for the early Franciscans. It is here that the friars returned each year for chapter, where St. Clare entered religious life as a follower of St. Francis, and where Francis died. |
